Indian Lands Conservation Area Trail - Dennis

11/17/2007, 10:30am - Lunch to follow hike.

Directions: From US 6, take exit 9, go south .9 miles on route 134 to the third traffic light. Turn right (west) onto Upper County Road. Take the right (north) fork to Main Street and turn right. After .2 mile, park in the north side of the Dennis Town Offices parking lot.

Preview: The banks of the Bass River were once home to the Pawkannawkut Indians, a tribe that was part of the Wampanoag Nation, which held sovereignty over the vast area from Cape Cod north to Massachusetts Bay. Today, the Bass River marsh is an important wetland habitat. Cattails provide tender roots for muskrats to eat and perches for red-winged blackbirds. This trail allows you to observe blue herons, search for tree swallows, or watch marsh hawks. Needles cushion your steps in the pitch pines, and it becomes easy to imagine a dugout canoe gliding softly on the expanse of the river as you relax at an overlook.

Hike coming soon!

June 2007

Hatches Harbor/Race Point Light walk - Provincetown - 6/16/07, 6pm - Dinner and more in Ptown after hike. Lets do a nice evening walk out to Race point light along Hatches Harbor. We have some guest hikers coming from Colorado - lets show them how beautiful and how much fun Cape Cod can be! Take Race Point road from route 6 about 1.5 miles to left on Province Lands Road, meet at the parking lot .5 mile on right.

Beautiful weather, perfect light and a chance to go inside the lighthouse made this walk the best one we have had so far. 10 people enjoyed walking out to Race Point where we all had a glass of wine courtesy of Doug. Afterwards we met at Clem and Ursi's in Provincetown for a great meal. See a Slideshow

May 2007

We’re going kayaking! Cape Outdoor Club is expanding the activities list. We’re thinking of doing one trip per month in April, May, June, September, October and perhaps one in early November, weather permitting. We’ll avoid July and August because it’s well nigh impossible to find enough parking at launch sites during high tourist season. Our first will be a fresh water paddle and then we’ll plan some great salt water trips for the warmer weather (June and beyond). CLICK HERE FOR TRIP INFO

Hike around Long Pond, Falmouth - 5/20/07 10:30am - 3.5 miles. Meet at Goodwill Park - entrance is off Gifford St. Take 151 to Sandwich Rd towards Falmouth, then right onto Brick Kiln Rd. and left on Gifford St.  From there we can walk around Long Pond and even extend the hike along the Glacial Moraine trail. Good Will park is between 28 and Gifford St., it's better to enter on Gifford because the other entrance is sometimes closed.  Park in the immediate parking places as soon as you enter rather than going to the far side which takes you to another (smaller) pond.  Gifford St. runs from Main Street in Falmouth downtown up to Brick Kiln Rd, and from Brick Kiln you can get to 28 (either East or West because 28 forms a huge loop in Falmouth) or to Sandwich Rd. which allows you to cut up to 151.

April 2007

Hike - Nickerson State Park, Brewster - 4/7/07 (changed from the 8th), 10:30am - Four Ponds hike. Meet at parking lot at the end of Flax pond road - at the boat landing on Little Cliff Pond. From main entrance of Nickerson State Park on Route 6A - Brewster, follow road to 1st left on Flax Pond Road. Follow to end.

Although the weather wasn't as warm as we would have liked, we all enjoyed Doug's commentary on the history of Nickerson State Park and the nature around the four ponds we hiked around. It was a longer hike, but was worth it! Photos

March 2007

Hike - Punkhorn Parklands, Brewster - 3/3/07 - What a day we had! Not a cloud in the sky. Very nice.

11 people this time. Thanks all for coming - very nice to meet everyone. Afterward we went to Brewster Village Pizza and took over the restaurant. They've never seen such a rush (in winter). Photos

February 2007

Hike - Wellfleet Ponds - 2/3/07 - Everyone (7 people) seemed to enjoy the sunny weather - with a slightly brisk wind. Not bad for our first outing! Afterwards we enjoyed brunch at the Wicked Oyster. See a slideshow of our hike on the photos page.
